Dine Well, Shine On: The Venice Vibe

I recently accepted some offers for dinner and sailing to get a fresh perspective and help celebrate my first book deal for Shine Through the Noise. Ms Loyel, a foodie and travel friend, joined me on the adventure. I often say that I would be very happy living in a hotel, writing my heart out like Hemingway (with more inspiration, publication and travel, less drinking to death).

Enter Hotel Erwin, a sparkling gem situated where Venice Beach meets the city.

Barlo certainly has has a distinctive menu! I thoroughly enjoyed tasting some items that I wouldn't regularly have.  Our palates were open and we were already in fine spirits after sailing Marine del Rey and Venice with our friends of The kitchen is run by Executive Chef Adam Steudle with Sous Chef Nick Ducher.  We we received a royal greeting by the Food & Bev team headed by Raymond and Dax, who told us about the bold idea of doing meat right in the midst of veggie and vegan trends that permeate Venice. All of their beef is organic and grass fed. All steaks are wet aged for a minimum of 3 days; all their dishes are created for an overall flavor profile - and this all comes through in the aromas and presentation. .


The restaurant is petite, but the food and the service are top notch. So go, don’t think about it, just make a res do it. The staff is knowledgeable and eager to help and suggest pairings. The chef dishes up wonderful new American cusine: we had classic poutine, roasted bone marrow (or "meat butter" as Ms Loyel calls it), truffle fries, the Barlo burger. and flat iron steak. Everything is fresh, tasty - and the ideal melange of delicate and hearty. The wine selection is small, but what you can drink are Central and Southern California wines which are good, with an Italian twist tossed in. The full bar offers some specialty drinks, (everyone says get the pear cocktail, "Who Pears"). I went with a throwback fave, The French Kiss. Twas expertly crafted by Raymond as an effervescent example of summer in a glass!

Barlo is a breath of fresh air with a lot of the bigger restaurants nearby.  
Fantastic service, really great meal, staff and experience.  


Shine on

I love being up with the sun on to get a workout in and have quality time on the beach. The sun's rays reaching across Marina del Rey to high tide and the shadows on the Santa Monica mountains are majestic, and always worth a trip. I especially appreciate the reaction of visitors when they stroll out on the Venice pier - several shades of awe and wow wash across their face within a few minutes.  Sometimes I get up and write in the morning, but I will always make time to visit this section of the Pacific's shore. 


Sure, it also works up an appetite. I had breakfast at Barlo with a SoCal caterer who said it was the best meal she has had in California in 6 months. Learn why with a peek at the menu and your own visit.


Hotel ErwinHIGH Rooftop LoungeI will definitely be back to try more items on the menu! The is legendary for panoramic views, sun-kissed small plates and pairings (do make a res - it fills up fast)! Erwin and his team have refined the hoel to an ideal blend of boutique and beach for every season.)  staff were welcoming and very helpful, and we shared fun things that we had discovered in Venice, Marina del Rey and West Hollywood. A special toast to the Hotel Erwin social media team and Jennifer and Eugene at the desk who helped make my stay amazing! (And there really is an Erwin who build the hotel in 1975!) There is just one elevator for the hotel and the veggie breakfast sausage is not house made, but these are minor compare to the big picture.
